Here, Dr. Francisco Gonzales discusses vertical gastric sleeve candidates and explains what types of patients are eligible for this procedure.

Vertical Gastric Sleeve: A Brief Review

Also referred to as a gastric sleeve resection, vertical gastric sleeve surgery is one of the newer bariatric surgery techniques.

During this procedure, Dr. Gonzales makes tiny incisions and uses a laparoscope and special surgical instruments to remove approximately 85 percent of the stomach.

After the remaining portion of the stomach is closed, it resembles a tube, or sleeve. Vertical gastric sleeve surgery can be performed on its own, or it may be recommended as step one of a two-phase process.

Who Is Eligible for Vertical Gastric Sleeve Surgery?

Several different factors are considered when determining candidacy for gastric sleeve surgery. Dr. Gonzales can assess patients on a case-by-case basis.

However, there are a few general requirements, which we explore in the sections below.

Candidates Must Be at a Certain Weight

The best candidates for this procedure have a BMI between 30 and 40. In most cases, patients have health conditions that are likely to improve with successful weight loss.

This includes conditions such as diabetes, sleep apnea, high blood pressure, arthritis, and joint problems, to name a few. Keep in mind, however, that BMI is not the only factor. Patients with a BMI over 40 can certainly still be eligible for this treatment.

Candidates Must Be Healthy Enough for Surgery

Though every patient undergoing bariatric surgery will be overweight, these patients should still be in good general health. This means they should be free from any medical condition that could make anesthesia or surgery a potential risk.

Candidates Must Be Committed to Serious Lifestyle Changes

Some individuals view bariatric surgery as a “magic fix”. Unfortunately, this is not the case.

While it reduces the size of the stomach, the effects of surgery can still be negated if patients do not adhere to post-operative dietary requirements. Therefore, if you are considering vertical gastric sleeve surgery, you must be prepared to overhaul your diet and exercise regimen.

This generally involves limiting carbs, increasing your intake of protein and fresh vegetables, and working out at least five days every week.

Candidates Have Tried Other Weight Loss Methods

The majority of patients who qualify for bariatric surgery have seriously attempted diet and lifestyle changes for many years with little to no success. If you have tried to lose weight in the past and have not been successful, then vertical gastric sleeve surgery could be an option for you.
