Mini Gastric Bypass Complications By Gaston Tessada on June 10, 2019

A woman looking in the mirrorMini gastric bypass surgery can help patients lose weight by reducing the size of the stomach and the length of the intestines. This procedure offers many benefits compared to traditional gastric bypass surgery, including a lower complication rate of 2.9 percent versus 7 percent.

At Oasis of Hope in Tijuana, Mexico, Dr. Francisco Gonzalez goes over possible mini gastric bypass complications, and what we can do to reduce the risk of each of these post-surgical problems.

Acid Reflux

Acid reflux occurs when stomach acid or bile comes back up into the esophagus, causing a burning pain in the lower chest area. This condition is also known as heartburn or acid indigestion. If this happens twice a week or more, you may be diagnosed with gastroesophageal reflux disease, or GERD.

The mini gastric bypass procedure is more likely to result in acid or bile reflux after surgery. If you have GERD prior to surgery, you may be better suited to traditional gastric bypass.

Dumping

Dumping syndrome is condition in which patients experience symptoms such as bloating, nausea, vomiting, abdominal cramping, or diarrhea, anywhere from 10 minutes or up to a few hours after eating.

Dumping syndrome can usually be prevented by consuming small meals, and limiting your intake of sugary foods. However, in more serious cases, medication or surgery may be needed to treat dumping syndrome.

Nutrient Deficiency

Mini gastric bypass surgery may affect a patient’s ability to fully digest or absorb certain vitamins and minerals. To prevent nutrient deficiency, we may recommend the use of daily vitamins.

Hernias

If you experience severe abdominal pain or tenderness after mini gastric surgery, it may be a sign of a hernia. A hernia can lead to bowel obstruction and should be treated to prevent further complications.

Undergoing treatment with a qualified surgeon, such as Dr. Gonzalez in Tijuana, can reduce the risk of complications such as a hernia.

Ulcers

Ulcers are sores that develop on the lining of the stomach, causing nausea, pain, and other symptoms. Ulcers are more likely to occur after mini gastric bypass surgery in patients that use nicotine products, alcohol, or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.

Loose Skin

Loose skin is an inevitable consequence of bariatric surgery. An excess of loose skin is more likely to occur in patients that are older, have been overweight for longer periods of time, or have undergone many weight fluctuations over the years.

If you have reached your weight loss goals after mini gastric bypass surgery, but you still have loose skin on different areas of your body, you can undergo skin tightening surgery. Procedures such as arm lift, thigh lift, body lift, tummy tuck, buttock lift, and breast lift can target areas of loose skin, improving patients’ ability to exercise, and helping them to feel more confident about their appearance.
